Bill See Discusses New Coming of Age Memoir “33 Days”

Longtime Los Angeles indie rock musician Bill See just released his new coming of age “docu-drama” memoir “33 Days.”  This is a recent quick Q & A with him from his Miracle Mile home.

Q. How did you come to self-publish? Did you try to get published traditionally?

A. D.I.Y. is in my blood from putting out my own records, touring, self-generating hype, and making people take notice.  We (Divine Weeks) got signed to a bigger label that way so for the book, self publishing is the logical approach.

Q. What self-publishing service did you use? Happy with the service?[…]

A Note from the New Guy

Hello, everyone.

I’ve been meaning to write this post for a few days now, but prior commitments have kept me from it. Now that I’m here, I want to take a moment to introduce myself directly.

Name’s Todd. I’ve been involved in self/indie publishing for the last 7 years. I had my first taste of it in college, when I interned for my university’s under-funded literary journal. That same year I raised money to do a very limited, offset run of my first short story collection. In ’07 I utilized Lulu’s services to release a novel; in ’10, I utilized […]

A Life Transparent: An Interview with Todd Keisling

Todd Keisling is the author of the very excellent A Life Transparent, just released via Lightning Source.  He’s also going to be taking on some of the editorial duties at SPR, so check out this interview to find out about his novel, his thoughts on writing, and what he hopes to achieve with the site.

About the novel:

He is the consummate husband. Stable, hard-working, and dedicated to his wife, Donovan is a paragon of the Middle Class.

Until now.

Strange visions of a monochromatic world. Bizarre sensations of physical transparency. At first, Donovan fears he’s losing his grip

Bonnie Turner – Author Interview

Note: details here about how you can complete this interview.

1. How did you come to self-publish? Did you try to get published traditionally?

Houghton Mifflin published my middle-grade novel, The Haunted Igloo, in 1991. I actively promoted it for a few years in elementary schools until my husband became ill and went on hospice. I was then too busy caring for him to keep up the school visits, which I loved. Then the book went out of print and HMC refused to put it back into print. They also rejected my sequel, Spirit Lights. I believe much of […]

Why I Am Not “An Author”

To be an author is to get paid for writing. I’ve heard this often enough that I’ve become quite comfortable with not being an author. Instead, I am someone who makes up stories and gives them away for free on the internet. I have always wanted to do this, but until the past year or so, it was not a serious option. Now, thanks to the emergent convergence of e-books and e-readers and iPads and iPhones and Androids and all the other great stuff coming out, it is not only an option, but the perfect one for me.

I’ve put […]

The Trouble with Amazon Critics

There’s an interesting post at the Nation called The Trouble with Amazon that’s a few shades too negative about Amazon’s influence on publishing.  Though Amazon has done some seriously shady things regarding pricing and strong-arming publishers, it also has advantages.  The main issue I have with the piece is this:

Take the issue of choice: when it comes to the books it stocks, Amazon makes no pretense of selectivity. Provided it carries an ISBN and isn’t offensive, Amazon is happy to sell any book Joe Schmo cares to publish. “We want to make every book available—the good, the bad and

Web Presence Checklist

You’ve spent months, perhaps years, writing your book. Did you do so for it to die in obscurity? Why then does its web presence not reach beyond the Lulu Marketplace? Why then doesn’t it even show up upon typing its title on Google? Why then does its Amazon’s sales rank sag below the 4 millionth mark? If that sounds anything like you, keep reading, for I’m about to list all those opportunities to broadcast your title and reach your target audience that you’re missing out on. To the extent that they’re inexpensive, easy, and of course applicable to your book, […]

The Long Road to Publishing Success… Begins Now

I recently self-published a new children’s book, “Ug Goes Out,” which you can read more about at http://uggoesout.blogspot.com.

So far I’ve spent $129 and have made a net profit of $11, mostly after selling books to friends, family, and coworkers. In this post I will explain my early marketing strategy, its successes and shortcomings so far, and my visions for its future.

1. Bookmarks

I am a middle school English teacher, and the neat thing about my job is that I have a captive focus group who can critique my work and maybe learn something in the process. After […]

An Interview with Henry Baum by Todd Keisling

<—That’s me, the editor of Self-Publishing Review.

Self-promotion time.  I don’t do a huge amount of self-promoting about my own book here, but here goes.  Case in point, didn’t mention that my novel, The American Book of the Dead, recently won the Gold IPPY award for Visionary Fiction.  It also won Best Fiction at the DIY Book Festival.

Today there’s an interview up by Todd Keisling.  I talk about the roots of the novel and self-publishing.  On self-publishing, a snippet:

TK: How about self-publishing? What got you started there?

HB: My first novel was released by Soft
