Barry Eisler Crunches the Numbers

Really can’t get enough of this story.  A Barry Eisler interview on The Daily Beast:

Ballantine managed to sell about 10,000 combined digital copies of my last two books at a $9.99 price point (a price point that was earning me $1.49 per unit sold, BTW) in the latest three-month period for which I have data. Call that 5000 of each book for three months, so 1,667 of each book per month. If I cut the Ballantine price in half and still can only move 1,667 units a month, at a $3.50 per unit royalty ($4.99 x 70% =

Amanda Hocking Getting a Book Deal (Updated)

This sort of flies in the face of Barry Eisler turning down $500K, but if Amanda Hocking is being offering widespread print distribution, merchandising, film deal prospects, and other things she can’t do on her own, it’s not surprising if she takes a deal – even if she’s already making a very good living on her own. From the New York Times:

Amanda Hocking, the darling of the self-publishing world, has been shopping a four-book series to major publishers, attracting bids of well over $1 million for world English rights, two publishing executives said.

Ms. Hocking, a 26-year-old

Kindle Chat: A New Forum for Kindle Authors

Heads up, Kindle authors. A new Kindle forum has arrived on the scene with its doors wide open to welcome new members. Kindle Chat is the brainchild of author and Book Chatter host Stacey Cochran, and you’re probably wondering about the need for another Kindle forum when sites like kindleboards are so popular. I wondered the same thing, so I contacted Stacey with some questions about why he decided to start the site:

“I started the kindlechat.org site largely because I used to enjoy kindleboards.com but that site has become an unwelcome place, with moderators who frequently resort to bullying

Mark Coker on the Downfall of Big Publishing

This week, Mark Coker posted a new entry to the Smashwords blog detailing the rise of self-publishing and discussing the broken model upon which big publishing is built. From the article:

If authors – the beating heart powering Big Publishing – lose faith in Big Publishing, then big publishing as we know it will die. By “Big Publishing,” I’m referring to the old, pre-self-publishing system embodied by the Big 6 New York publishers, in which the publisher serves as the author’s judge, jury, gatekeeper and executioner.

If Big Publishing approves of your book, they acquire it. Post-acquisition, an author can

Kindle Books Outsell Paperbacks

Via Galleycat:

Here’s more from CEO Jeff Bezos, from the release: “We had our first $10 billion quarter, and after selling millions of third-generation Kindles with the new Pearl e-ink display during the quarter, Kindle books have now overtaken paperback books as the most popular format on Amazon.com. Last July we announced that Kindle books had passed hardcovers and predicted that Kindle would surpass paperbacks in the second quarter of this year, so this milestone has come even sooner than we expected – and it’s on top of continued growth in paperback sales.”
