Lulu Nixes DRM for eBooks

An interesting announcement by Lulu, posted on their blog.

Effective January 15, 2013, Lulu will no longer offer Adobe’s Digital Editions DRM as an option when publishing or revising eBook content in EPUB and PDF formats. DRM works best when administered by those who control how content is purchased and viewed. Companies like Amazon, Apple and Barnes & Noble integrate a reader’s experience from purchasing to downloading and finally to reading. These companies do a fantastic job in this area, and eBooks published through Lulu and distributed through these retail sites will continue to have the same rights management

Lulu Automatically Distributing Ebooks to the iPad & Nook (Updated)

Lulu has seen the writing on the wall and is going full bore with ebooks, moving away from its print on demand model.  They recently came out with an ePub converter (good), but are now automatically distributing books to the iBookstore and Nook (not as good). I just received this email:

Lulu wants to make sure that your title is available to every potential customer on the planet, starting with the 120 million+ readers who own an iPhone®, iPad®, or iPod touch® or Barnes & Noble’s NOOK™ brand of e-reading products and shop at our eBook distribution partners.

You can

Lulu Has it Together

This was a comment on the Get it Together, Lulu post.  Warrants its own post:

I don’t work for Lulu, but I do work for one of their competitors. And while I find it amusing to see them get bashed by bloggers on a regular basis, there are a few points that I think you should consider when you create your posts.

1. Self-publishing companies have to make money in order to exist. If they can’t make money, then they can’t help people publish their books. So, complaining that they have a profit component to their business model isn’t […]

Get it Together, Lulu

Lulu’s been exhibiting quite a few problems lately.  Here are two posts on Lulu’s mishandling of ebooks and their clients.  The first is reprinted from Mike Cane’s iPad Test blog, titled Lulu And The iBookstore: Say NO!

Get Your eBook in the Apple iBookstore

Don’t do it.

Here’s why.

Lulu says:

ISBNs. Apple requires ISBNs on eBooks. Lulu can assign one for free.

And who will own that ISBN? If you’re getting it for free, I doubt that’s going to be you. See why ISBN ownership matters.

Lulu says:

Validation. Apple has a strict file validation process. All files

Wattpad and Lulu Team Up

Via MediaBistro comes news that Wattpad is teaming up with Lulu to offer print on demand services for Wattpad stories:

Wattpad, the Toronto-based eBook-publishing social network, which recently completed a round of funding, today announced a partnership with Lulu, the self-publishing and printing company, to create a branded Wattpad store on Lulu.com. Click here to check out what they’re officially calling “The Wattpad Marketplace on Lulu.com.”

To this writer, Wattpad leaves a lot to be desired. Stories are formatted like blog entries – with breaks between paragraphs and no indents – and there are no italics. Worse, though, is […]

Self-Publishing News: Lulu and Kindle (Updated)

Two major developments this week in self-publishing. Lulu.com is going public and looking for a $50 million public offering – interestingly on the Canadian market.

Why Canada? The local equity market has been on bit of a boom, and in 2009, saw 28 new issues worth C$1.8 billion, compared with the C$682 million raised from 57 new issues in 2008, the story says. Less stringent scrutiny on the Canadian exchange is also probably the reason why that seems more feasible than U.S. markets.

Remains to be seen if CSX would be receptive to a still-nascent market player like this. Also,

The Lulu Book Review Gets a Redesign

The self-publishing blogosphere just got a lot more slick and professional.  The Lulu Book Review is now the LL Book Review – offering reviews of books on CreateSpace and Wordclay, as well as Lulu, with a totally revamped design.  This is great news as self-publishing becomes more legitimized and a part of the overall dialogue.

In editor Shannon Yarbrough’s own words:

For over a year, the Lulu Book Review has been offering Lulu authors a chance to shine.  With some exciting new changes, the site will now reach out to more indie authors and do it in style.  In March

Wil Wheaton Releases Book on Lulu: Sunken Treasure

Wil Wheaton, popular blogger, best known for his roles in “Stand by Me” and as Wesley Crusher on “Star Trek: The Next Generation,” has released his next collection of work on Lulu.com.  Wheaton’s already published books before via Subterranean Press and O’Reilly Media, but he chose to self-publish the collection himself.  As he says on his blog,

Sunken Treasure is doing great, and if the last two days are any indication, my Operation Crazy Idea to release more original material using this kind of POD technology and distribution is going to quickly become Operation Awesome Idea that

Lulu.com Cuts Staff Due to Economic Slowdown

This news is from last October, but it’s important for anyone considering using the Lulu service.  Lulu has showed some ill effects due to the faltering economy – as a result it is cutting its workforce in order to make up for lost revenue.

On the one hand, this is surprising.  Lulu has a fairly good business model.  Given that books are only printed when they’re bought, Lulu does not lose money on books that are printed but not sold, as is the case with a traditional publisher.  Every Lulu author will likely print up at least one book – […]

Lulu.com: Free Self-Publishing

Lulu.com is like the Blogspot of self-publishing companies.  If you’re interested in getting a book published, you could have one set up and mailed to you within ten minutes.  It’s really that easy.  All you have to do is upload a PDF or Word file, which the Lulu engine will convert to PDF, select a cover template and book size, and that’s about it: you’ll have a printed book.  In this way, Lulu is a pioneer in self-publishing: the ability to order one book at a time, as needed, rather than bulk ordering books up front.

That’s the difference between […]
