A gritty novel that shines a light on the ugly side of alcoholism and the dark legacy of abuse, Facing the Past: Reflections of an Alcoholic by Frank C. Senia is a dizzying tale of personal redemption.
After waking up in a daze in Phoenix, Tom’s life spirals out of control as he puts the troubled pieces back together. Stampeding through his own fresh shot at life, making rash decisions, and falling in lust, all while maintaining a very unhealthy buzz, Tom is a compelling and surprisingly relatable protagonist. While Tom is clearly still in crisis, with plenty of toxic habits and dangerous behaviors on display, the author reveals the inner turmoil and helplessness of someone teetering dangerously on the edge.
As Tom works to uncover the truth of his recent history, it allows Senia to focus on the resolution of trauma, both on the surface and what remains deeply buried, which is a powerful thread through much of his work. This “Hangover” premise isn’t for comedic effect, but instead gives a serious edge to the plot, where the story takes readers on a journey of recovery, righteous attempts at improvement, painful setbacks, and the buoyant power of love and genuine emotional support.
The story and lead character have strength and purpose, but the prose itself is rough around most edges, coming off as rushed sometimes, and meandering at others, along with choppy dialogue and occasionally unbelievable plot turns. The secondary character development is also limited, particularly for Zoey and Judy, who function as female foils to Tom’s struggle, but lack necessary depth.
Overall, while the execution and authenticity could be improved, Facing the Past is a resolutely honest and inspiring novel.
