Via press release:
A role of the Association of Independent Authors is to establish and maintain standards for its members with regard to both writing, and a code of conduct for when dealing with others in the industry. In the same way individual publishing houses offer an implied guarantee of editorial quality for the titles they publish, the Association of Independent Authors assumes a similar role for its members who are career-focused professionals engaged in the art of writing.
The formation of thirteen chapters across the globe offers an opportunity for members in those locations to meet face-to-face, and to develop initiatives suited to their local community, for example monthly events with guest speakers, trade fairs, library programs, community charity events, book launches, tours and signings, coffee shop promotions, and hosting local literary events.
Authors who have self-published, those who plan to do so in the future, and authors who have previously published with a publishing house but who plan to self-publish in the future, are invited to join the AiA this month with a first-year complimentary membership using the Promo Code: CHAPTERS

…interesting press release. I have two, gut-level, first impressions:
1) The trusting voice in my head says: “What a great way to bring credibility to indie authors, and to raise the bar on the quality of independently-published works.”
2) The skeptical voice in my head says: “For a small, recurring fee, you can help fund yet another organization trying to make a buck by standing between authors and readers.”
Only time will tell if this is a good thing or a bad thing.
Jason, I think it is reasonable for independent authors to be skeptical since there are so many scams in the marketplace. Might I suggest therefore that you take up the complimentary first-year offer and see for yourself? At the end of the year, if you don’t believe in what we’re about, then don’t renew your membership. We’re non-profit which means all income goes to a number of projects that advance the greater good. I think you’ll see that we are very focussed on our vision.
I personally believe that independent authors, while working on advancing their own writing and platform, should spare some time and energy on how they can contribute to the bigger picture and that is changing perceptions about self-published books. That will benefit all of us in the long-run.

I just signed up. I see a real need for this, and was thinking of doing it myself. A SE Florida chapter for Miami-Dade and Broward would find a large number of selfpublished authors willing to join. To organize to do things like promotions at brick-and-mortar bookstores is a great idea. Contact me about getting a chapter in my region going, whoever you are.
Hi Neil, great to have on board! We’ll establish your Chapter as requested, and discuss with you directly in-house.
Regards
Mel
Neil, I agree with you once again. I signed up a few weeks ago. Someday there will be an organization most independent authors will wish to be a part of. Maybe it will be the one known as “AiA.” Best wishes for your southeast Florida chapter.
I joined too! It’s been good for me so far. Plus someone there reviewed my first three chapters and gave me great feedback…for nothin’! I like where it’s heading.
