The City of Angels is in dire need of saving from an undead apocalypse in The Bureau of Undead Investigation by Connor Mackay, a whip-smart buddy cop zombie thriller.
In a future where Big Pharma has cracked the code to resurrection, the undead walk among the living – for a time, and for a price. However, not everyone who receives the “Blessing” chooses to use their extra time on the right side of the law, which is where the Bureau of Undead Investigation comes in. Abby and Lukas approach the job differently – one by the book, the other by the seat of his pants – but when they learn that someone named the Reaper is building an army of hyper-violent zombies from the forgotten dregs of society, they finally have a solid case.
The dialogue between Lukas and Abby crackles with authenticity and wit, while the bursts of intensity and horrific action are just as good as any jump-scare zombie flick. Making additional caustic critiques of the pharmaceutical industry, government overreach, inept authorities, and the designed oppression of capitalism, Mackay artfully layers his prose with real-world commentary, with a tongue firmly planted in his cheek.
Fast-paced and wildly original, this snarky and smart novel is a clever mash-up of genres that takes the undead genre in an entirely new direction.
