Murderous schemes, long-buried secrets and desperate rescues abound in So Into Her by D.L. Yoder, an adrenaline-filled thriller with more than enough romantic tension to go around.
Paying for sins of the past while exploring new love in dangerous places, Yakiesha finds herself on the run with the enigmatic Marty, the man who replaced her recently murdered boyfriend at the head of a shadowy research team. Working together to stay alive, and to figure out who would be willing to kill them both over “Bluetooth for the brain,” these two make a wickedly smart and magnetic duo.
Delving into near-future tech and the vicious realm of human progress, this book initially comes off as pulp fiction, but it also boasts some thought-provoking philosophy and contemporary commentary. However, on a technical level, the prose could use a heavier editorial hand, both for basic tense agreement, missing words, grammatical and syntax errors to an over-reliance on idiomatic language and unsurprising descriptions. The shifting narrative voice does give readers the full-spectrum experience of being inside both protagonists’ heads, but at times this can be too revealing, preventing readers from connecting their own dots.
That said, the author’s ability to puppeteer a compelling mystery and inject it with action, humor, and surprising twists makes this a steamy and high-stakes escape.
