A sweet, clever middle grade adventure about a group of rocks who end up on a treacherous journey in a vast wilderness, Topher Allen’s Geo is an absorbing book about the importance of asking questions and not letting fear define you.
Geo is a rock who works way too hard as a miner in the underground city of Golem’s Hollow. The town is largely controlled by a wealthy man named Mr. Noble, who is a dominant force in everyone’s lives. Geo knows that there’s more to Golem’s Hollow and Mr. Noble than meets the eye, but he’s too scared to learn the truth. When Geo and some friends get turned around in the woods outside the city on a camping trip, they meet a kind group of outsiders and uncover the harsh reality behind the perfection of Golem’s Hollow.
This novel will appeal to a wide age range of readers, as its inspirational themes of taking chances and venturing outside of your comfort zone are good advice for everyone. It’s also wonderful to see a middle grade book with main characters who are manual laborers. Allen’s rocks are adorable and Geo’s lively dialogue and lush descriptions are a pleasure to read, as well as providing an inspiring and necessary message.
