Frank C. Senia presents a quartet of thought-provoking novellas in Collection of Four, a well-balanced and memorable collection. From the insightful observations of a career barman to an old man discovering the existential crisis of age, this collection takes readers on a powerful exploration of life, love, meaning, and mortality.
“The Visions of Antonio” is a kaleidoscopic ride through the alcohol-soaked and story-filled mind of a bartender, one who has lost more than his fair share in life, but is too often stuck on the listening side of the bar. This romantic and heart-wrenching novella ends with a twist that will drop your jaw to the floor.
“You Gotta Love Phoenix” is a surreal spree through Arizona as one disillusioned man explores just how easy, and tempting, it would be to leave his entire life behind and start all over again. “A Week to Remember” is a similarly strange and lustful tale, one that is almost too wild to be believed, but this well-crafted fantasy hangs on the edge of possibility, and emotional danger.
In terms of the writing itself, the pace often feels rushed, which leaves rapid plot developments feeling less than believable. Some of the language also reflects outdated ways of thinking and speaking, and may raise the eyebrows of some readers, but the author must also be commended on his authenticity and thematic focus.
In entertaining and accessible ways, Senia addresses universal and timeless themes – regret, redemption, lust, greed, and our endless penchant for dreaming. The vulnerability of the internal monologues and the challenging subjects tackled from the very start make this collection provocative and compelling.
