Author Jim Meeks-Johnson serves up a weird and wonderful space romp with his second book of the Entangled Galaxy series, Umlac’s Legacy: Rogues and Misfits.
After defeating Umlac, a ruler of the Immortal Ascendency, the Earthling heroine at the center of this series must deal with the deadly halls of cosmic power and the backstabbing blobs she now rules. The problem with loyalties divided across the galaxy is that conflict is inevitable, and these universally significant stakes make for epic storytelling. The author’s unique universe expands even further in this installment, yet the minute details of alien tech and future history make the entire story feel prophetic and immersive. Armed with seemingly boundless creativity and a deft pen for short bursts of clever wordplay, Meeks-Johnson knows how to capture his readers.
There are few deliberate points of exposition, which forces readers to pay attention to every line and educate themselves on this strange landscape, but this doesn’t slow the pace, as information is delivered in quick, efficient narration and there are few wasted scenes or conversations. Even with the tangled plot line of betrayals and spies, political machinations and dirty negotiations, the author generates momentum effectively, with more cerebral passages balanced with fast-paced or action-filled sequences.
The syntax occasionally becomes repetitive, and the narration could do with a few more vivid descriptions, but for a high-stakes space opera where reality must be checked at the door, Umlac’s Legacy is an undeniably fun ride.
