Author Roberta M. Griffis and illustrator Jerelyn Abicca-Smestad combine their talents for the whimsical and lesson-packed children’s story Miss K.A.R.E.N.’S. Mystical Magical Emerald Green Garden Shed.
Caroline is a young girl who just moved into a new house after her mother’s life unexpectedly turned upside down. Trying to find some sense of normalcy or peace, Caroline befriends their quirky neighbor, Miss Karen, whose garden seems to hold endless wonders, particularly emanating from her sparkling green shed. Mixing subtle magic with moral lessons and compassionate guidance, this book is an uplifting story of friendship, showing children how to overcome sadness and uncertainty through human connection, simple pleasures, caring for others, and music.
The illustrations are bursting with vibrancy and emotion, which matches the tone of the dialogue and the pace of the narrative. The prose is occasionally too heavy with description, and some of the dialogue, particularly between Caroline and Sadie, doesn’t feel altogether natural, but ultimately these are small critiques. For a simple story, Griffis packs in a great deal of emotional complexity, from the struggles of unemployment, financial insecurity, and loneliness to the positive benefits of responsibility, respect for one’s elders, and trust between new friends.
Told with a sharp and memorable voice, this short morality tale is an easy read, but its thoughtful content and vivid colors will keep young readers coming back time and again.
