In life, there are victims and triumphs and nowhere is this more evident than in Artist Free Zone, an inspiring work of lesbian romance by Annette Mori.
Just shy of her forty-fifth birthday, human resource director Melissa is thrown a devastating curveball when her lover, Colette, walks away from their eight-year relationship – and then has the gall to lie about why she’s leaving. With plans for their future together in tatters, Melissa sees little hope for her love life in a new town filled with cowboys and Republicans…
Mori has written a compassionate story about modern-day relationships. Told from Melissa and Colette’s alternating viewpoints, we are able to see both sides of their relationship, warts and all. Melissa is willing to do practically anything to maintain their relationship, despite its imperfections, while Colette is adamant about not staying in a relationship that she feels is choking the life out of her. At times, Melissa is too much of a doormat to Colette while her lover is not above using Melissa as her personal ATM. Both characters are clearly flawed, which is what makes them so irresistible.
A raw and compelling read, Artist Free Zone speaks of the vulnerabilities, the hurt, and the healing that come from a broken relationship and our resilience to try and trust again.
