Jai the Albino Cow by Gloria D. GonsalvesWritten by Gloria D. Gonsalves and illustrated by Nikki Ng’ombe, Jai the Albino Cow is a delightful picture book for young children that sparks imagination at every turn.

Anjait “Jai” is the youngest of three cow siblings living in Kole Hills. Jai is different from her older brothers in that she has a white coat, pink eyes, and fluffy hair and suffers from Albinism. Other cows outside her family believe she’s cursed. One day, Jai is chosen to participate in a special dance called the Dance of the Cattle Kings in which no female has ever participated before. Cows from everywhere come to watch this dance and Jai is afraid others will make fun of her but when she takes her spot to begin the dance, something shocking and wonderful happens…

Gonsalves’ narrative is in English and Swahili, giving the story wider appeal. Good sportsmanship, acceptance and having the courage to persevere are all valuable life lessons skillfully imparted throughout the story. Ng’ombe’s colorful and expressive illustrations, especially those featuring Jai, organically convey a host of emotions and energy, inviting young children to identify vibrant colors, images and actions.

Although a child’s picture book, Jai the Albino Cow is a moving story for all ages, and would be an excellent book for parents and children to share together.
