The Amaranth Chronicles: Deviant RisingThe Amaranth Chronicles: Deviant Rising by Alexander Barnes and Christopher Preiman welcomes readers into a beautifully crafted world full of imaginative imagery and rich characterization.

Set in a time when Earth isn’t the only planet with viable life on it, the story examines the conflicts that arise when power shift and unrest is certain and palpable. Full of secrets, class separation, and longing to know the “good old days” when things were beautiful for all, the novel gives the reader more than just a wonderful sci-fi storyline. It gives them a mission to believe in, or fight against.

Characters such as Lithia, and Sarah form the Deviant Rising crew – a skillfully conceived group of characters who are immediately engaging and relatable, as if we are following the journey of a group of friends, with each character’s backstory as integral to the story as the present-day action.

In this second book by Barnes and Preiman, fantasy is brought to the same level as reality, which is both inspiring and frightening. The multiple threads in the novel are easy to follow, and intertwine in a very fluid way. The novel is a hefty length, but well worth the read. All in all, The Amaranth Chronicles is an impressive offering from this writing duo, which will be immensely satisfying to fans of science fiction.
