The powerful effects that dystopian realities can have on young people is a common element in post-apocalyptic fiction. In Escape the Future, the gritty new novel from Tom Schneider, this youthful perspective is highlighted, and in the horrors of a world where all the lights have gone out, three young protagonists must find a way to survive and protect those they love most.
In this raw depiction of the future, Schneider masterfully depicts Eva, Layla and Henry, three distinct and uniquely motivated young characters that infuse this story with authenticity. The family dynamic makes this story as powerful as Cormac McCarthy at moments, and the brutal realism of the prose is bleak, but impactful.
Some of the narration drags and the pace fails to be consistent, so a solid editing sweep could help to tighten up certain sections. However, the dialogue is believable and dynamically moves the plot forward, while the grim premise of the novel creates an undeniably contemplative and thought-provoking experience for readers. Although it is not a wholly original premise for a work of post-apocalyptic fiction, and may seem distant from the tribulations of our present world, there are clear parallels with the present if one pays attention, making this a timely, troubling, and memorable novel.
