In his new book, Masculinity is our Future, Tim Patten argues that the most fundamental ideas of being “a real man” remain critical to the future of society, but must also be dynamic and progressive. This book digs into the cultural and traditional definitions of masculinity, pointing out the toxic elements, but also reminding readers of its importance, for a well-rounded and provocative examination of gender dynamics.
Patten is not ashamed to be a man – far from it – and appreciates that many masculine traits have driven progress and success for thousands of years. That being said, he also recognizes that the world is changing, and that perspectives must similarly shift. As gender equality moves forward and long-standing issues are finally addressed, it is important that masculinity still be a vital part of the equation.
Though the blurb of the book and the title may suggest a one-sided “pro-male” take on social issues, the book is much more nuanced than that, offering a surprisingly insightful breakdown of masculine traits, and their importance. Topics like fatherhood, bullying, violence, military service, sexual dynamics and gender politics are all intimately linked to the concept of masculinity. Patten explores both the good and bad, admitting that his own gender is replete with faults and predilections for everything from suicide and substance abuse to repressed anger and violence towards others.
Patten doesn’t make excuses for being a man, but does provide a dense and philosophically intriguing manifesto about the future of masculinity. Some of the writing is sloppy or carelessly written, certain opinions are presented as facts, and there is an obvious bias to the message, but as a whole, Patten makes his arguments well, and leaves readers with plenty to think about.
