Writer Pat Muir shows us that missing person cases are rarely what they seem in the compelling police procedural, What Happened to Flynn.
A divorced real estate agent and avid fisherman, Art had been reported missing by his broker ten days earlier. His missing person case lands on Detective Shanisa (Shane) Notfarg’s desk in October, 2008. A seasoned ten-year veteran with San Diego’s homicide division, Shane’s investigation is ordinary – until Art’s vehicle turns up trashed and she subsequently discovers that he was a whistleblower in a money laundering scheme. Shane becomes determined to get to the bottom of Art’s disappearance – or possible murder – not realizing that it will take her the next seven years to do so…
Muir carefully lays out the facts of this missing person case, with Art Flynn’s life deconstructed and analyzed, and introducing an intriguing cast of suspects. Shane’s character comes off as doggedly determined while Flynn’s character is compelling in absentia. The narrative is delivered with clarity and just enough red herrings tossed into the mix to keep things interesting – with the answer to what happened to Flynn being very interesting indeed.
Though a new cover is in order, What Happened to Flynn has unexpected moments throughout, making the novel a satisfying and page-turning mystery.
