Quaint, small-town charm belies an inexplicable presence in Daffodil Hill and the Purpose of the Lavender Fields, a highly imaginative novel by Danette Key.
Daffodil Hill is a pleasant, laid-back little village in upstate New York with a population of just a thousand citizens. Not much happens in this sleepy little village so when sacred gardens become vandalized and strange footprints are found in the forest, cries of disbelief soon turn to demands for justice. Little do Daffodil Hill’s citizens know but their small village is under siege by a perpetrator the likes of which no one has ever encountered before.
Key has created a nostalgic setting in Daffodil Hill that has a cozy, small-town feel to it. This, together with a cast of eclectic characters that are instantly familiar, encourage a reader to dive right into the story. However, with a genre best characterized as a cozy mystery that straddles the fringes of sci-fi/fantasy, there is a noticeable lack of tension. Told through many different characters, the narrative is confusing at times, with shifting points of view and inconsistencies in enunciation that sometimes distract from the story’s momentum.
With a great setting, compelling characters, and an imaginative story overall, Daffodil Hill and the Purpose of the Lavender Fields is a unique novel that will satisfy readers of both cozy mysteries and fantasy.
